Herman Gottlieb was born in Nahbollenbach on April 18, 1878. He was the second Gottlieb to arrive in America, arriving in 18951. He was naturalized as an American citizen on May 20, 1902. He worked as a ribbon salesman, and later had his own business. Herman was a witness to sister Rose's wedding in New York in 1900.

Herman married Fannie Newman in Manhattan on December 14, 1904. Fannie was born in New York on March 26, 1881. They had two children: Herman and Fannie had two children: Herbert and a daughter who may be living.

Herbert N. Gottlieb

Herbert was born in New York City on July 17, 19062. He was an attorney specializing in copyright law. He was the chairman of the California Copyright conference, a long-time excutive of Robbins Music, and was the West Coast Regional Director of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) from 1969 until his death. He enlisted in the Army during World War II.

Herbert remarried to Beatrice Castelle in Los Angeles on May 13, 1959. Beatrice was born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 3, 1914. She was previously married and had an adult son from that marriage. Herbert and Beatrice had no children together.

Herbert died in Los Angeles on October 5, 1974. Beatrice remarried a few years later.

Footnotes

1. His petition for naturalization gives his date of arrival as May 10, 1895, but there are no Gottliebs on the ships that arrived at Ellis Island on that date. He is probably the 16-year-old Hermann Gottlieb who arrived on the Noordland on June 6, 1895 bound for Cleveland. The Cleveland destination is consistent with family stories that Rose originally lived with and worked for family in Ohio.
2. The Social Security Death Index, California Death Index and Peggy's family tree use this date of birth, but ItalianGen's New York Birth Index gives his date of birth as January 17. This is probably a transcription error on ItalianGen.
