Theodor Gottlieb

Theodor Gottlieb was born in Nahbollenbach on February 4, 1881. He worked as a shopkeeper. He married Luisa Haas in Germany, probably around 1908. Luisa was born in Treisenheim around 1877. Theodor and Luisa lived in Offenburg, Germany, where they had two sons: Hans and Frederick. Theodor was obviously well-loved by his siblings, because two of them named children after him: Theodore Siesel and Theodore Gottlieb Rich.

Theodor and Luisa stayed in Germany until the brink of the Holocaust. They came to America in December, 1938, and were met at Ellis Island by son Hans, who had arrived two years earlier. They lived in Brooklyn, in the same apartment building as Hans, around the corner from his brother Herman. In America, Theodor owned a dry goods store.

Luisa died in Brooklyn on September 6, 1948. I have found no record of when Theodor died, but he was still living in 1945 when he was identified as son Fred's next of kin.

Hans Gottlieb

Hans Gottlieb was born in Offenburg, Germany on September 5, 1909. Hans was a physician. He studied at the universities of Heidelberg, Munich, Freiburg and Berlin, and ultimately earned his degree from the University of Basle in Switzerland. He was living in Basle as the Holocaust was beginning. Hans was the first of this branch of the family to leave Europe, coming to America on the SS Queen Mary in July, 1936. He was met at Ellis Island by his uncle Herman. He settled in Brooklyn, around the corner from Herman. Hans was naturalized on September 17, 1940.

Hans died on June 11, 1993 in Manhattan, New York. Jean died on January 8, 2006.

Friedrich Gottlieb was born in Offenburg, Germany in 1914. He was working as a clerk when he came to America on the SS Aquitania in October 1936. He was met at Ellis Island by his aunt Rose. In America, he worked as a motion picture film editor.

In 1941, Fred enlisted in the United States Army. He earned the rank of Second Lieutenant, serving in the Interrogation of Prisoner of War team, where his native knowledge of German was undoubtedly invaluable. He died in combat in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge and was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Legion of Merit.
