Caroline (Philippine) Joseph Gottlieb

Caroline (Philippine) Joseph was born in Nahbollenbach, Germany on May 15, 1837, the daughter of Johann Jacob (Hirsch) Joseph and Johannatta (Eva) Levi. Her name appears in German records and on her tombstone as Philippine, but the family knew her as Caroline and her Hebrew name on her tombstone was Channah bat Hirsch. Similarly, the family knew her parents to be Hirsch and Eva, but their names appear on Caroline's marriage record as Johann Jacob and Johannatta.

Caroline married Isaac Gottlieb, a man almost 10 years younger than her, on July 2, 1872, in Sotern, Germany. Caroline was 35 years old at the time of the marriage, but she went on to have at five children before the age of 44, all of whom lived to adulthood and four of whom had children of their own: Wilhelmine ("Mina"), Rose, Karoline, Herman and Theodor.

Caroline died June 25, 1921 and is buried next to Isaac in a small graveyard in Nahbollenbach.
