This site is a collection of genealogical information related to the descendants of Isaac Gottlieb and Caroline Joseph of Nahbollenbach, Germany.

Isaac and Caroline had five children: Wilhelmine ("Mina"), Rose, Karoline, Herman and Theodor. Rose and Herman emigrated to New York before 1900. The rest stayed in Germany, married and had children. Most of the remaining family came to New York as the Holocaust was beginning, though one branch survived the Holocaust in hiding in Europe. Several of the men who came to the United States went back to Germany as American soldiers fighting World War II.

Isaac Gottlieb and Caroline Joseph are almost certainly the same couple as Issac Gottlieb and Philippine Joseph, who are buried together in a small Jewish cemetery in Nahbollenbach and whose marriage is recorded in the civil registrations of Oldenburg, Germany. If so, then Isaac Gottlieb is originally from Bosen and his ancestry can be traced back through Oldenburg records to the early 1700s.

Out of respect for the privacy (and identity security!) of their descendants, I have provided little or no detail about living descendants. I have provided a complete Alphabetical List of all the descendants I have identified, but the Descendant Tree shows only the placeholder "Living" for any person under the age of 100 whose death has not been confirmed. The Ancestry Tree shows the ancestors of Isaac Gottlieb and Philippine Joseph, as found in the Oldenburg records, assuming that these are the same people as Isaac and Caroline.

Much of the information on this tree was originally recorded by Margaret Rice Rich ("Peggy"), wife of Isaac and Caroline's grandson Leopold Herbert Rich ("Leo"). It was provided to me by their son, who continued to maintain it after Peggy's death. Additional information comes from a Hebrew school genealogy project compiled by my father (Isaac and Caroline's great-grandson) around 1950, when Rose and others were still alive. I have found documentation supporting what Peggy, her son and my father knew, and have also fleshed out some additional branches of the tree.

This site is created and maintained by Tracey Rich, great-granddaughter of Rose Gottlieb Rich.
